Sapphire-vented Puffleg

I photographed this hummer in June 2010 while in Ecuador. I was thrilled to see it until I started viewing it closer in the camera. Its beak has some issues, probably a fungus. It was tough watching this little thing trying to feed.

Great shot!

I'd suggest the local discrete lesion on the edge of the lower bill is the result of avian poxvirus infection...likely the result of transmission by the bite of a blood-sucking arthropod (probably blackfly or mosquito)
