Migratory bird pics
ROY NEHER WILDLIFE Posted: Sun, Aug 29 2010 4:45 PM Reply

I thought I would use this thread to post pics of migratory birds as I get them. Some are just arriving and some are just about to leave. Some you may recognize and some you may not. And some...are just odd.

It always catches me by surprise that the fall migration starts here in Oklahoma in the middle of the summer when it is 100 degrees. I took all of these pics today.

Pics from today. Each pic I post in this thread will be of a different bird, no repeats, so, look closely. I fed a lot of mosquitos today..:(

Love your Wilson's Warbler. I was trying to get a pic of one while I was in Colorado this summer. The best I managed was a tiny blurry dot.

Thanks. Which one?  ;)  If anyone has figured out what pic #10 is, you can understand why I am squirming in my chair, waiting for the rain to quit so I can go back out there. I have only seen two of them in my life and they were 35 years apart. I got the pic below, today before I got rained and 'skeetered out. I need to remember to do two things: 1. Buy stock in Skin-So-Soft.    2. Put it on!

Tell me about it. I think I've been mosquito fodder more often this summer than in my whole life. I don't know how many times I've had my eye in the viewfinder, the bird almost in focus, my finger on the trigger and I feel that bloodsucker piercing the thin flesh on my knuckle.  What to do? Take the picture and give my blood to lesser being (I use "lesser" losely) or slap the mosquito and risk losing the shot? I suppose it matters how important the bird is to my files.  I often think that mosquitos and birds are in cahoots - like a decoy and hunter.

Anyway, I'll give your pics a shot - 1. female Indigo Bunting, 2. Molting Indigo, 3. I really have no idea - a female Blue Grosbeak? 4. Nashville Warbler, 5. Wilson's Warbler, 6. Kentucky Warbler, 7. Yellow Warbler, 8. female Yellow Warbler or female Wilson's Warbler, 9. female Brown-headed Cowbird?, 10. female American Redstart, 11. female Ruby-throat.

I believe that these are the correct IDs:

#1, #2 and #3 male Indigo Buntings
#4 Nashville Warbler
#5 adult male Wilson's Warbler
#6 adult male Kentucky Warbler
#7 adult male Yellow Warbler
#8 immature male Wilson's Warbler
#9 immature "greenie" Painted Bunting
#10 female or immature American Redstart
#11 immature male Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Ach! Sparrows!

My first inclination was a young American Tree Sparrow but the beak looks too orange. My 2nd thought was a Field Sparrow, but the eyeline looks too dark - perhaps a juvenile Field Sparrow. My 3rd thought was a juvie White-crowned Sparrow, but the flanks are dark.... As you may guess my juvidentifiers aren't very good.

It's a Field Sparrow. About biting insects, I think it's hard to beat San Blas (Mexico). Has anybody had to close their eyes to spray their faces twice in the early morning?

Thanks for the sparrow ID. Yes, mosquitos have been really bad this year. I am getting bitten as I sit here at the computer..:(   They are a small variety that leave a huge, itching welt that lasts about an hour. I am a walking mosquito feeder. Hope all the bats and others appreciate me fattening them up. I guess, if I stood outside long enough, the bats, swifts and swallows would start buzzing me...or what's left of me.

I have started a second thread, (Migratory bird pics #2) because there will be too many pics for one thread.
