Help on IDing this Oriole
ranger Posted: Fri, Feb 5 2010 9:42 PM Reply

Here is 2 photo's out of 4 I took of an Oriole. Not good shots and they are from prints I scanned and cropped. I'm just going to tell you that it was taken in the spring and in the USA(to help you keep an open mind to what it might be :)

Care to take a stab at what it is??

Thanks!!

Hey Ranger, I am having trouble getting to your pictures.  Can you post them onto the discussion itself?

I'll see if I can jump in here and help everyone see the photos. Ranger submitted them to our Rarities Gallery, but we wanted to know what the bird is before we put them up in the gallery.

OK, I'm trying again... can you see the photos now?

I still don't see them.  Maybe it is my computer...

 Matt,

I just get a blank page when I click on either link. I can't see the pics either.

I was able to use the links the first time I checked, then when Matt put up the pics all I saw was red X's, I came back later and saw the pics,  Back again and the links don't work and the x's are back????

When I saw them the bird looked like a non breeding Hooded Oriole with more grey on the head than the pictures in my guide.  The other possibility is an immature Audubon's Oriole but there didn't seem to be as much black on the face as the pictures of the Audubon in my guide.  But, since I cannot see the pictures anymore I cannot compare more......

I replaced the photos above, and will paste them one more time here. Sorry for the confusion.

They look like immature male Audubon's Orioles to me. The gray head & nape are more characteristic of the Audubon's than the Hooded according to my field guides & Cornell's bird ID site. Are these two different birds? The patterns of black on the heads are different in each photo.

Hi Matt, all,

No, they are of the same bird. I took 4 pictures in all, but these two show about all that I got.

I think the Very early light and the bird from 2 differant directions cause the shift?? Sun rise from the right. Sorry for the delay from here, but I have a slow dial connection and it takes me a SOLID 6 mins to bring up this page. :(

Thank you Matt for posting the photo's of the birds!!
