Duckling/waterfowl swimming

My daughter took this photo of a duckling/waterfowl swimming in a canal in rural south Texas. Can anyone tell us what kind of bird it is? The pic won't attach. The duckling looks black with 3 white horizontal stripes across its face and one white long vertical stripe along the back of its head.

Welcome,  sorry I cannot help with the ID but if you look in the "Welcome" thread of the forum the second post pinned is instructions for posting photos.  You need to have a hosting site like Flickr or PhotoBucket.  You then copy the URL for the picture. Come back to your post and use the Icon on the above toolbar that looks like a tree and paste it in.  That will add the picture.

We look forward to seeing some pictures and hearing about what you see.

I haven't seen your photo yet, but my money is on a small grebe. The most likely one, I believe, is a juvenile Least Grebe. Here's a photo -

Pied-billed Grebe juvie is a possibility, but it's noticably brown and the streaking on the face isn't so well-defined as to count the number of stripes. But, here's a photo of one -
