Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
That feeder is made by Brome. I have done some of their photography for them. I just finished shooting this feeder for Woodstream. It is the Squirrel-Be-Gone III and it works on the same principal. The weight of the squirrel pulls the outer cage down and blocks off the feeding ports. If you're wondering, a Cardinal weighs about half as much as the head of a squirrel, if that much. So, it would take a lot of songbirds to lower the cage at all.

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
I'm sorry but, I don't know the price, I never ask. I use both of those feeders plus, squirrel proof poles, baffled feeders by Arundale and even baffles over my suet cages. I live in a heavily wooded area of the Cross Timber Forest and squirrels are only the beginning of the monsters that attack. :( Turns out I could use a 'possum proof coffee pot, closet and.....bed.

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
The SB series are excellent feeders. I have the plus, classic and mini. All do a great job of preventing the squirrels from getting to the seeds. You must mount the feeder at least 4 feet off the grounds and at least 16 inches from the nearest structure (tree, fence, house). If not the squirrel can grab hold and shake the seeds out thereby defeating the mechanism.

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
I have pole mounted feeders out in the open. For others, I use a 10ft section of 1in. black steel pipe, suspended horizontally between 2 trees or poles so that it would have to be a 5ft jump to the feeder. I then put a baffle over the feeder so they can't get on it from the top. All of this is 6 feet off the ground.
That worked until I woke up in the middle of the night to see a raccoon hanging by his back toes, looking like a 50lb bat, taking out tools from his tool belt and meticulously dismantling the feeder. I think that's what I saw, I was on meds at the time. But, my having to run the pack of jackal squirrels off that were feasting on the downed feeder and rebuild everything the next morning seemed to confirm it.
I can't wait until flying squirrels adapt to birdfeeders. They don't weigh much and they could hit the feeders from anywhere. It'll be cool...sorta...and reeally noisy...

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
By far the Squirrel Buster Plus is one of the best Squirrel Proof bird feeders on the market today. I position the bird feeder at least 8 feet away from any jumping off
point. Squirrels can jump up to eight feet horizontally and six feet
vertically. For additional protection, (just like Roy) I've invested in a baffle and also placed the feeder on a bird feeder pole. I have just discovered this forum and already love it. Happy Birding Everyone!

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
Brome says they don't recommend using cheap seeds like millet. Luckily, I didn't read the instructions. This model doesn't hold much of the larger seed but, it will hold a couple of million millet seeds so I use it solely for them which makes the Buntings very happy. If they're happy I'm happy.

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
Nice Buntings photo Roy! We use both the SB Plus & the SB Classic at our high altitude feeders here in Colorado. They both work great on our Fox Squirrels. I just discovered the Birder's World Forum and I think it's great! We have very competitive pricing on both the Squirrel Buster Plus and the Squirrel Buster Classic bird feeders. We personally use them and recommend them to customers daily.

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
I used to live in Colorado back in the 60s and had some very interesting animal encounters. One day, while wandering about up in the mountains.....I looked up to see a blue squirrel with long pointed ears looking down at me. I rubbed my eyes and blinked a few times but, yes, that is a blue squirrel with long pointed ears. I followed it around for over an hour and it always remained, a blue squirrel with long pointed ears...
...and it looked a lot like this one...

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
Blue squirrel Roy? Well, it was the 60's...
Probably a black Abert's squirrel with a hangover.

Re: Squirrel Buster Plus Feeder
I'm not the only person to have seen one (photo above). I believe it is a light color phase of the Abert's. It took me 3 years, after I saw it, to find a pic of one. I wondered about my powers of observation (sanity) all that time. I have run into several non birders over the years that went through the same thing after they had caught a quick glimpse of a Painted Bunting. Validation can be a wonderful thing.
