Two items:

First, David Sibley thinks that less experienced birders will buy the online guide because more experienced ones will "...still prefer to use a book."  But I suspect that changing the verb might change the conclusion: in my case (as an experienced birder), I would indeed prefer to *use* the book but I far prefer to *carry* an iPod/iPhone.  In fact, although most of my experienced birder friends have a shelf full of North American field guides, I can't think of one who actually carries a book into the field.  But I do know several, including myself, who carry electronic guides right now.  So I believe that the market is larger than David might guess.

Second, David thinks that 300 MB is a pretty big application.  By the standards of typical apps, it is.  But consider that the smallest true 3rd Gen iPod Touch you can buy has 32 GB - that's GB, not MB.  (Yes, Apple does sell an iPod Touch with "only" 8 GB, but careful reading of the specs shows that this one is a relabeled 2nd Gen device, not one of the newer series.)  Similarly, the smallest 3Gs iPhone has 16 GB.  In other words, the current app uses 1% of the capacity of the smallest "real" iPod Touch or 2% of the smallest iPhone.   And we all know that the capacity of these devices has been increasing at a phenomenal rate.  Considering the insatiable appetite of birders for information, zooming right past 300 MB should not be a show stopper!

Can't wait to try out the app!
