I carved this woodcut of an American Wigeon in moonlight, never thinking the contrast would turn out so powerful. The extreme light bouncing off the duck's back was totally serendipitous, but hey... I'll take it! We have tons of wild wigeons visiting Victoria in the spring and fall migrations...

This particular duck is a common site around any of the lakes and rivers around Ottawa. I just love the orangy/red feet.

I visited the Celery Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Allendale, New Jersey, this weekend and was able to get quite close to a pair of American Black Ducks. They were sleeping on the water when I arrived, but became more active shortly before dusk.

The wigeons are very hard to get close to. They head for the far side of the pond as soon as you come close.

When I took this shot of a young American Wigeon I was just happy to get it as close as I did. They usually stay on the far side of the pond when humans are around.

They do not let me get too close at times. I find them harder to get than the Wood Ducks.

A couple of male American Wigeon taken at one of the local wetland ponds in central Ohio during the northern migration. This location is one of the first places to thaw due to very shallow water. This draws all passing water birds to congregate by the thousands. Many different species call this place...

I photographed these ducks in Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.

This is a plentiful and common duck at Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. Many of the birds will congregate on the road in front of you while driving the levees or they will huddle together on an island in the marsh.
