This photo was taken at Cottle Lake in Linley Valley near Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. This cooperative male Western Tanager came down to nearly eye level while collecting small green caterpillars to feed its young. The lake is a bit of a hot spot for tanagers and Black-headed Grosbeaks in the spring and summer. This shot was taken with a Canon 50D and a Canon 500mm "L" series lens with 1.4x teleconverter.
