I was photographing Common Terns, feeding along the shoreline of Mackinac Island, Michigan, the evening of July 4, 2009. They kept dipping their bills in the water, but never dove. It wasn't until I was reviewing images that I found this frame and the answer to my mystery. The terns were feeding on hatching mayflies! This poor mayfly was enjoying the first (and last) seconds of its short life, and I somehow managed to capture this stunning moment. A shot of a lifetime!

Excellent action shot, really well captured.

Terrific shot. We call them fishflies in Manitoba, and the terns are usually Forster's, but the fate of the fly is identical.
