Painted Bunting

Although the quality of this picture is low, I thought the circumstances might make posting the picture worthwhile. The bird is a male Painted Bunting seen on June 12, 2009, on Akimiski Island, James Bay, Nunavut, Canada. As far as I have been able to find, this is not only Nunavut's first recording of the bird, but also the furthest north the species has ever been recorded (if I am wrong please correct me). It was seen by three researchers (Derek Mackenzie, Gabriel Foley, and Austin Taverner) on the island in the evening for about 45 minutes, after which it got too dark and the bird was not seen again. It certainly made our night!!! - Gabriel J. Foley, Photo credit: Derek W. Mackenzie

Incredible to find that species so far North. Thanks for sharing this great image.

Are you having unseasonably warm weather? Just wondering, as we have this fall so far. We used to see painted buntings in the neighbor's evergreens, white pines & blue spruce about 12-15 years ago. Then we moved a mile or two southwest & saw some the first couple years here in our backyard. It is unusual to see them here in central Iowa anyway (they are more common in southern Iowa), since they are more of a warm weather bird. People haven't believed me when I tell them I've seen them right here in town, but Canada, wow, this is of epic importance. Thanks for posting.

I think these are still my favorite bird sightings, as our children were around 8 to 12 when we got to watch them nest outside our livingroom picture window just across the driveway. We spent hours watching them with their young for about 3 to 4 years.
