All the birds I could fit in one frame
ROY NEHER WILDLIFE Posted: Tue, Feb 1 2011 4:46 PM Reply

The blizzard hit last night. This morning I opened a 25lb. bag of black oil sunflower seeds and filled 4 large feeders and then covered the ground with them and millet. I will have to do it all over again tomorrow.  Sheesh. I counted about 80 in that pic. I need a wider angle lens.

I have hundreds of birds in my yard right now. Birds that can't find food because of the snow cover have to go out in search of food and many find this place. They don't all stay but, many do so my number of winter birds is growing every year.

189 birds in February... not bad!

That list includes eight species I've never seen: Barred Owl, Carolina Chickadee, Carolina Wren, Hermit Thrush, Brown Thrasher, Fox Sparrow, Harris' Sparrow and Purple Finch. Cool!

I didn't do a count. Didn't think about it, plus, I don't know if your allowed to send in results from other countries...

Where are you at, ergc?  I wouldn't have thought about the GBBC if Falensmom hadn't mentioned it. I probably have more species and bird numbers in winter than I do in summer. I'll have to compare them sometime. Late April, when many of the winter birds are still here, the summer birds are arriving and the migrants are stopping on their way north, it becomes downright dizzying around here. Love it.

I do wish they would hold the GBBC in the summer because in February it is, basically, the same birds as the Christmas bird count. It just seems redundant.

I live in eastern Mexico. Doesn´t stop me from birding or going to the CBC, but I don´t think the GBBC allows me to join in.

Good point about both being on February. If I ever find out why it´s so, I´ll post it somewhere. Here, the CBC circles are far from everybody´s home, so you would get different birds in  the GBBC.

By the way, my name is Eric. "ergc" is the result of an extreme lack of inspiration while choosing my screen name.

Eric, I hope you take lots of pics. You must see a lot of beautiful birds.  Do you see the Blue Bunting, as opposed to the Indigo?

I take a few shots, but would rather take good looks of the bird before taking the camera out. Blue Bunting is a year-round resident and I love them! We actually also get Indigo bunting, but only in their winter plumage, which is dull. These pictures aren´t great, but they´re the only ones I got.

Here´s a Blue Bunting in the light.

And here´s the same individual in the shade. Funny how the colors show better here.

I can´t seem to be able to post the pictures, which are on Flickr.

Anyways, there are their links:

Unfortunately, I couldn't view the pics. I have had that trouble with Flickr before.   I think you need to go back to them, copy their addresses again and insert them using the insert media icon. The green one that appears along the top when writing a post. I'm looking forward to seeing them.

I did that the first time, it didn´t work.

What program do you use, if not Flickr?

I have my own website and I just upload pics into the photo library then copy the "properties"  address of the pic from there. Flickr has safeguards to keep people from copying your pics. Do you have a website?
