Birdsong links
Betsy Posted: Wed, Oct 12 2005 12:31 AM Reply

Birdy asked for birdsong links in some thread that I can't seem to relocate. Rather than bury them under an unrelated subject line, I'll give them in their own post. These are the best links in my collection.

The Macaulay Library has multiple recordings and videos of birds (as well as other animals). Download their Ravenviewer if you want to see spectrograms when you play them, and then click on the rightmost play button when you play recordings from the lists you get when you search for a species on the site. There's a small collection of downloadable bird sounds, but the main collection is reached by Clicking Go! in the Explore our Online Collection box and using their search engine. If you want guidance using the collection, click on get Started on that page.

The Borror Laboratory of Bioaccoustics has multiple recordings of many passerine species, including species that live only in other countries. Check out all the goldfinch recordings, for instance. It also tells you what the birds in the background are:

(If that link requires you to sign in, go here instead and click on OhioLINK in the text paragraph under News.)

Borror Lab home page: http://blb.biosci.ohio-state.edu/

The Mangoverde World Bird Site aims to have multiple recordings and videos of all the world's birds eventually, and has got a whale of a lot of them already!  (Thanks to Omar for the reminder.)  http://www.mangoverde.com/birdsound/index.html

The Cornell Bird Guide has recordings for North American birds:
http://www.birds.cornell.edu/programs/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/

as does the Whatbird site:
http://www.whatbird.com/

The USGS Patuxent site has a large collection also:
http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/songlist.html

The eNature site has recordings for over 550 birds (thanks again to Omar): http://www.enature.com/birding/audio.asp

Large collection that includes birds in other parts of the world as well as other animals:
http://members.tripod.com/Thryomanes/AnimalSounds.html

Another decent collection:
http://www.naturesongs.com/birds.html

The Ontario Environment Canada site has recordings for a number of the birds it covers (thanks to Lucas for the info):  http://www.on.ec.gc.ca/wildlife/wildspace/life.cfm?

Sound collection from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology's Animal Diversity Web:
http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/resources/naturesongs/index.html

Bird songs from tropical America:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/

Then there are a number of sites that have recordings of only a subset of species. Here are some:

Birding by Ear -- Spring Tuneup:

Birds of the Upper Texas Coast, for us Texans:
http://www.texasbirding.net/sounds.htm

12 songbirds:

A variety of birds that occur in New York State, plus links to other birdsong sites:

10 from the Stokes:

Collection of Barred Owl sounds:

Assorted owl calls (you'll need to know the Latin name):

And here are some guides to help you learn songs or brush up on your knowledge of songs:

Betsy, thank you soooo much [bow]! I have such a time trying to id birds by their song - I even have trouble id'ing some of my favorites by their songs and calls! I just now found your post, so I haven't had a chance to check them out yet, but I am definitely going to save them....thank you - you're an [angel] ! I'll get back to you....

You're most welcome, Birdy! Saving 'em off is the idea -- you don't have to listen to 'em until you want to find out what some bird sounds like.

FantaSTIC!! I feel birding by ear is the best and quickest way to Locate and ID birds in the field. I am trying to put together a folder where when I click on a picture of a bird it automatically plays all of its songs and calls. (Bit of a problem when it comes to Northern Mockingbirds I guess.)[swg]

Yeah -- not to mention Carolina Wrens and..... [:)]

How are you making the recordings start up when you click on the picture?

The LBB's don't stand a chance if they make any noise[:)] I recently purchased the Thayer Birding Software that has songs from Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It works pretty cool. The package even states, "Recomended for ages 6 and up." Even I have figured it out. [;)] Also, I bought Peterson's Western BIrds on CD. I try to listen but the bird songs drive my mini dauchsunds NUTS! [:p]

I relocated this great post to the Bird ID forum, where I'm sure lots of folks will see it. I'm also making it sticky so it doesn't get buried at the bottom. Great resources, Betsy. Thanks!

I mostly use my own recordings on those areas I visit frequently, but it's so cool and I thank you for the chance of hearing some songs from those birds on the places I'll visit for a first or a second time...

One last post I'm hoping Julie will make sticky again. Smile
