Long-legged spoonbills can be found in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia as well as South America, the Caribbean, and the southern United States. Each has a large, flat, spatulate bill, but only the Roseate Spoonbill, pictured here, is delightfully, playfully pink. We selected these photos from our online galleries.

Last week’s Friday photos: Coquettes

Wingspan: This bird was stretching its long pink wings in Tampa Bay, Florida. Mikelandwehr took the photo.

Secrets: Does the one spoonbill want to tell the other a secret? Wahoo Woman photographed the pair at Gatorland, north of Orlando in central Florida.

Landing gear: Wings back, feet forward, this pale spoonbill appears to be putting on the brakes before landing. Troylimphotography snapped the photo.

Pals: The intensity of a spoonbill’s pink depends on its diet. The more carotenoid-rich crustaceans a bird eats, the pinker it gets. Wmarissen photographed this very pink duo.

Red eye: Blake Shadle photographed this bird in Tampa Bay, Florida. Almost every wing feather is visible.
